Samsung reportedly plans to announce its first Apple Vision Pro competitor in the second half of next year. The Korean giant will apparently unveil the unnamed AR headset during its second Unpacked event of the year, where it typically launches new flagship foldable smartphones, but in 2024, we might get another surprise. Unfortunately, the company likely believes that this mixed-reality headset will be a niche product, which is why the report mentions a limited initial volume of the product.
Production of the unnamed Samsung AR headset is set to start in December next year, but the initial shipment volume is pale compared to the Apple Vision Pro
Though Samsung’s AR headset does not have an official name, its codename, according to Korean media Joongang, is ‘Infinite(muhan),’ and it will probably ship with the ‘Galaxy’ branding, like the company’s various product lines. An earlier prototype was said to be tested with an Exynos 2200, and its design was generic and pale in comparison to the Apple Vision Pro, so it is no surprise that Samsung reportedly scrapped that version in favor of something significantly better.
The newer version will likely be powered by Qualcomm’s second-generation XR chipset, which can deliver better performance than the Exynos 2200, but we cannot comment at this stage on how it will hold up against the M2. As for the pricing, no details are provided, but Samsung is apparently only mass producing 30,000 units for the initial shipment run.
Mass production of the AR headset is said to start in December, but a low volume product suggests that it is a niche product and will carry a higher price tag, so even a lower shipment run will not hurt Samsung’s prospects. The firm’s reported target of 30,000 units is considerably lower than the Apple Vision Pro, which is estimated to ship 600,000 units next year.
However, even that figure fails to meet Apple’s expectations, as its other businesses generate revenue in the billions. Assuming the technology giant fails to gain sufficient traction with its first-generation AR headset, it might not launch the Apple Vision Pro 2 until 2027, and Samsung might follow the same path.
